Perhaps it is fitting that we begin with those who came here while bringing life to the world. This particular flavor of ghost is one of the oldest and was quite prevalent until modern medicine. But I should note that not all Ubume are spirits of the dead. An occasional few are, in fact, manifestations of the emotion tied to the loss of a child. Some will appear pale and bloodied while others will look no different from those around them. Traditionally, Ubume would ask someone if they could hold their swaddled baby. The baby soon becomes increasingly difficult to hold until it is revealed to be not a child but a large stone.
